Project Description

The Großglockner High Alpine Road is a panoramic road through the highest Alpine range in Austria, near to Austria’s highest peak, the Großglockner (3,798m). It was built and opened during the first half of the 1930s as a tourism road with the purpose to up the high Alpine areas for the newly developed automobile. It is currently a toll road owned primarily by the Republic of Austria (79%) and by the states of Saltzburg and Carinthia (10.5% each). There are about 1m visitors on the road each year. The purpose of this project is to assist with the application process for the road to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The file has previously been submitted, but was rejected due to insufficient comparison with other similar roads worldwide to show its Outstanding Universal Value. If successful, the road would be the first of its kind to be listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Solimar is assisting with research of comparable roads to aid in the application process.

Major Activities

  • Review the list of application criteria compiled and provide feedback to change or amend the list of comparative criteria.
  • Add to the list of touristic roads that are comparable to the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße from North America, Asia, South America and Africa.
  • Create a short description, including descriptors to be identified with the whole team (such as length, altitude, economic and social criteria, conservation criteria etc.) for a portion of the list.

Results

  • A successful application for the Großglockner High Alpine Road to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage List
